Oliver Brown

Nominated Position(s): VP Tech

Hi! I am a 4th year math and computer science student taking a minor in physics. Although my major is currently math and computer science, I am spiritually much more aligned with math and physics, but the computer science aspect means that I’m handy with tech. I’ve been nominated as Computer Wizard 💻🧙 for other clubs in the past, so I have some experience in the setting up, taking down, and general troubleshooting of many computer issues. I’d love to get more involved and help out PhASERS next year!

Lauren Harrison

Nominated Position(s): VP Marketing

Hello, I’m Lauren! I’m currently a third year Physics and Astronomy student with a passion for everything space related! I am currently one of the open house facilitators at the UVic Observatory, so you can often find me gazing up at the night sky! If my head isn’t buried in a textbook, you can often find me hanging out with my cats or going for a bike ride!

I am excited to run for the Vice President of Marketing Position! I have lots of creative experience that I am ready to put forward to this position! Last summer I got the chance to be a video developer for the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), so all things creative comes super naturally to me! I am also a part-time cake decorator so experimenting with visuals and designs is always a lot of fun! I look forward to continuing to grow the impact that social media and creativity has in this course union!

Humra Khan

Nominated Position(s): VP Marketing

Hello, I’m Humra Khan! I’m a first year student that’s intending to declare a major in Physics by the end of this term. I believe I will be successful as Vice President of Marketing because as a first year that’s switching over from a different program, I am aware of what attracts people, especially first years, to physics and what it has to offer. I am also someone who is very passionate about generating campus culture and engagement, and I would love to help with that through outreach initiatives and creative poster designs.

As for my skillset, I was an active member of my school’s leadership team during my high school career. I was also the lead in organizing a culture festival and hackathon at the same school. These experiences have helped me understand the ins and outs of event timelines, generating interest, and adapting to new situations. They’ve also given me connections and people skills that I believe would be an asset in a marketing role.

Sahil Mehmi

Nominated Position(s): VP Events

Hi everyone! My names Sahil Mehmi and I’m a third year Physics student, wanting to become the vice president of events this year! Having such heavy course loads, it’s important to balance academic success with enjoyable events and socialization with others! If elected, I promise to hold exciting events that people are actually willing to go to! I plan to use google forms to communicate with students on what events they want to see; specifically I hope to introduce events that include collaborating with others to understand concepts and general ideas in Physics much better, sort of like a study group (if yall want). I’m always open to hearing suggestions, and thats it vote for me please and thank you 🤑

Miranda Niddrie

Nominated Position(s): VP Merchandise

Hi! My name is Miranda (she/her), and in September I’ll be going into my fifth year finishing up my honours physics and Biochemistry degree. I am rerunning for my current position of VP Merchandise. This past year I was in charge of the hoodie order, t shirt design contest, and I also introduced some new merch such as stickers, tote bags, and nalgene water bottles. Some projects I want to work on over my next term as VP Merchandise include more stickers, bucket hats, magnets, and any other ideas that are sent my way! 🙂

Iain Rosen

Nominated Position(s): VP Tech

Hey I’m Iain! I’m the current VP Tech for Phasers and going into my third year here at UVic. In my term as VP Tech, I setup the website for Phasers (uvicphasers.ca) and the new printer on the fourth floor. For the upcoming term, I’d like to plan to improve the method we use to connect to the printer by setting up a cloud option so you don’t need to use the USB cable. I’d also like to setup an ordering system through the website for future merchandise to allow easier tracking of payments and order histories!

I’m always open to suggestions, so feel free to email us if you’ve got some ideas on how technology can help out Phasers.

Ash Samra

Nominated Position(s): President

Hello! I’m Ash, I’ll be going into my fourth and final year of honours physics next year. During my undergrad I’ve been passionate about community building both at UVic and in the larger national physics community.

I have been involved with Phasers since I started here but in the past year, I was VP events. I organized many recreational and development focused events, including several information sessions, panels, and talks. This role was so much fun but it unfortunately didn’t give me the time I’d like to execute my other ideas for the course union. I aim to broaden our scope by developing a mailing list of the physics undergrad body to ensure a reliable avenue of communication from Phasers. With this, I hope to start a regular, short email newsletter of upcoming events, notable research and job opportunities, and other important information for undergrads. Further, I want to make sure we expand our outreach to first and second years, getting them engaged through classroom visits and increased promotion to make sure the future of the course union is strong after all us oldies graduate! I have many more ideas for solidifying and organizing the structure of Phasers that I hope to put into place.

I also sit on the department’s EDI committee; I’d like to increase awareness of the resources out there for EDI concerns and create an avenue for undergrads to safely and anonymously discuss any concerns or ask questions. Beyond my involvement at UVic, I’m also the Undergraduate Councillor for the Canadian Association of Physicists where I represent undergrad viewpoints to the larger physics community in Canada.

I hope by being president I can leave a positive impact on Phasers and the physics undergrads of UVic!

Owen Sandner

Nominated Position(s): VP Publications

Hi! My name is Owen, and I’ve been working on the Phase Shift newsletter since its inception with the last VP of Publications (or Editor-in-Chief) Kyle. I am currently in the process of redesigning the Phase Shift brand image alongside a small team, with a new logo, vision and publication process in the works.

As VP of Publications, I aim to release at least two dense editions throughout the year, as well as provide a space for anyone interested in writing, editing or design to have their work published. Getting a newsletter to publication is a monumental task that involves a number of moving parts, and I believe that with the experience we’ve gained from the first (and soon to be second) editions, we can successfully continue the newsletter and improve on its well-established foundation with a proposed weekly email list, containing fun facts and updates.

On top of this, I also aim to bring in a number of first- and second-years to the team, so that we may establish a cycle to ensure the newsletter doesn’t die out after the current team graduates. This is a major desire of mine, and one that I wish to pursue with a series of class visits, posters, and social media posts. I also wish to find a faculty liaison, who may provide the foundation for the newsletter to remain a staple of the Phasers identity for years to come.

Roan Stafford

Nominated Position(s): VP Finance, VP Events

I will work with Sahil to make the best events and financial decisions ever.

Grace Tomasi

Nominated Position(s): VP Events

Hi my name is Grace, and I’m currently a third year physics student aiming to double major in physics and math! In my free time, I love climbing, organizing my Spotify playlists, cooking something delicious, and hanging out with my close friends! I’m running for the position of VP of events, and I hope you find my candidacy very well suited. Firstly, my previous role as the president of Sardis Secondary School’s Key Club provided me with many opportunities to create and co-ordinate school wide invites and fundraisers. A crucial part of my role was also reaching out to members of the community, student body, and staying in touch with the leaders of Kiwanis Club. Additionally, I am currently design lead of the Phasers newsletter. This responsibility requires creativity, pre-planning, and organization with the other team members. My outgoing and friendly personality has allowed me to developed various connections within the Math and Physics facilities. Which can be very beneficial to the position of VP of Events. Thank you for your time 🙂

Amith Valath

Nominated Position(s): VP Tech

Hello there, my name is Amith and I’m a third year honours student in Physics. Born into the time when technology as we know today was developing, tech gained a very prominent piece of myself apart from physics. This year I am running for Vice President of Tech hoping to build a sign out system for the extra copies of textbooks in the fourth floor lounge. I would also love to add a section in the PHASER’s website where course outlines of the past can be accessed. I have experiences with websites and databases which can be used for this purpose. So if you think I’m a good fit, vote to create the techno myth.
